The report seems to suggest that the 2020 iPhone lineup will be powered by a new Apple A14 Bionic chipset. Moreover, the chipset will be based upon TSMC’s new 5nm die lithography. It’s a big shift from Apple’s current 7nm A13 Bionic SoC, and is expected to bring about major improvements in performance and power consumption. Nikkei also says that Apple’s 2020 iPhone lineup will be the first generation of iPhones to support 5G connectivity. To achieve this, Apple will be pairing Qualcomm’s 2nd generation Snapdragon X55 5G modem with its upcoming A14 Bionic chipset, and will be built on a 7nm process. In terms of network performance, the Snapdragon X55 is expected to support download and upload speeds of 7Gbps and 3Gbps, respectively. Apple’s decision to use Qualcomm’s 2nd generation modem isn’t all that surprising. To recap, the two companies formally ended hostilities back in April with a six-year licensing agreement. It should also be noted that Apple also purchased Intel’s modem division back in July, which does raise the questions as to why Apple is relying on Qualcomm for modems in the first place. At this point, all the mentioned information here is merely hearsay and rumours, so it would be best to take this with a pinch of salt until the launch of the actual devices.
