The system consisted of several components including an 8MP front-facing camera with infrared sensors and Time-of-Flight technology (ToF). detects objects in front of it by firing a beam of infrared light and measures how long it takes for that light to bounce back.
This feature gave the world the first smartphone to have palm vein authentication using the Z Camera. LG’s hand ID identifies owners by recognizing the shape, thickness and other individual characteristics of the veins in the palms of their hands. Users can hold their palm in front of the camera to unlock the phone. However, the phone still has a fingerprint sensor and face recognition if the new tech is not your thing. The Z Camera also provides a feature called “Air Motion”, which roughly translate to air gestures. Interestingly, LG got rid of the earpiece speaker in favour of Crystal Sound OLED technology. The speaker is embedded within the display and the display serves as a diaphragm, vibrating the entire surface to produce stereo sound. LG claims it provides clean audio while making phone calls in noisy environments. Moving on to performance, the G8 comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset under the hood along with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage expandable to 2TB via microSD. The G8 is getting its power from a 3,500 mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3.0 through USB-C port. There is also a dedicated Google Assistant button much like the Bixby button from Samsung.
LG apparently launch two variant of the G8, a dual camera and triple camera variant. The triple camera configuration has a 12MP standard camera, a 16MP wide-angle lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens while the dual camera variant won’t feature a telephoto lens, as reported by The Verge. There is also the G8s, a similar phone with different specs. According to the press release from LG, the G8s appears to powered by the same Snapdragon 855, a triple camera setup, 6GB of RAM with optional 64GB or 128GB of internal storage and a 6.2-inch lower resolution display. For the time being, LG has not released any announcement about the pricing and availability for both variants of the G8 ThinQ. There was also no further information regarding the G8s ThinQ as well.
