True to the earlier leaks by Evan Blass, Microsoft is releasing the Surface Laptop 3 in two display sizes, 13-inches and 15-inches. Like all Surface devices, the displays on the notebooks are touch panels too; more specifically, they use Microsoft PixelSense Displays.
At the base, Microsoft has also made some improvements to the Surface Laptop 3’s keyboard and trackpad. The keyboard has a 1.3mm key travel that, according to Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer, Microsoft Devices Group, makes for a more immersive, silent and comfortable typing experience. The trackpad’s also 20% larger than its predecessor; a solution to a situation when Surface users don’t have access to a mouse, Panay said. The Surface Laptop 3 is also more “modular” than previous Surface Laptops, though that term is clearly being used loosely here. On a side note, this accessibility is clearly Microsoft’s answer to when iFixit gave one of its Surface devices an abysmal rating for repairability.
Panay explains that you’ll still need special tools in order to do the deed, but the bottom line is that fixing and replacing parts in the Surface Laptop 3 will far less problematic. For the first time in Surface history, the Surface Laptop 3 will also ship out in two CPU flavours. For the 13-inch model, it will come with a 10th generation Intel Core processor while the 15-inch model is equipped with the new AMD Ryzen Surface Edition CPU that also includes a built-in Radeon RX Vega 11 GPU.
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is slated for availability in the US from 22 October onwards, with pricing for the device starting from US$999 (~RM4190) for the 13-inch and US$1199 (~RM5029) for the 15-inch unit. Unfortunately, its availability for Malaysia is not yet known at the moment. We’ll keep you posted once we hear more from Microsoft.
