The studio made the announcement via a tweet. In it, NetherRealm Studios said that support for Mortal Kombat 11 has come to an end. Which means no more new characters or DLC in general. It’s a pretty short, and therefore, vague statement though. The lack of clarity still leaves the possibility of more updates in the form of balance patches.

— Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate (@MortalKombat) July 2, 2021 As for what the new game is, there’s no clue as to what it could be just yet. Though chances are it would be the next instalment of the two fighting game series that it currently has. This means either Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12. Or the company can just pull a fast one and announce something completely new. It’s not entirely impossible, as the company is still under the umbrella of Warner Brothers.

All that being said, it will be awhile before we hear anything official. The tweet doesn’t mention if the new project was already underway while NetherRealm Studios was still supporting Mortal Kombat 11. But even if that is the case, if the studio is only now shifting its focus onto the new project, it’s likely far from ready for a reveal. (Source: NetherRealm Studios / Twitter)
