The company’s 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM consists of eight 12-gigabit chips and four 8-gigabit chips, which is twice the capacity found in most current high-end laptops and PCs. It also allows for a data transfer rate of 5,500 megabits per second, therefore making it 1.3 times faster than previous LPDDR4X chips. Furthermore, the new mobile DRAM also provides more than 20-percent energy savings for devices, as well as packing ample capacity that enables enhanced 5G and AI features. Samsung hopes that their new chip will further enhance mobile gaming experiences by allowing for dynamic and responsive gameplay, as well as high resolution graphics on premium smartphones. The company states that the new LPDDR5 mobile DRAM is manufactured at its Pyeongtaek site, and is continuously expanding to meet demand. Samsung adds that 16GB LPDDR5 products based on third generation 10nm-class process technology is planned for mass production in the second half of 2020 – in line with the development of a 6,400Mb/s chipset.
