This doesn’t come as a surprise though. Late last year, Senior VP at Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hiroyuki Oda has stated that manufacturing and shipping of all versions of PS Vita would end in 2019. He also added that Sony has no plans in creating a follow-up to the handheld gaming device.

Prior to that, Sony has also stopped making first party games for the Vita in 2015 while ending the release of contents through physical media last year. The company has also stopped providing free PlayStation Plus contents for Vita. PS Vita came at a time where mobile games are on the rise and for many, this made a dedicated handheld gaming device a niche purchase. Not to forget, PS Vita also utilized a proprietary memory card that has steep prices. It has also faced fierce competition from Nintendo 3DS which somehow managed to prosper despite challenges from mobile games. (Source: Polygon)
